Thought I'd start a topic on ancients. They are such a HUGE part of the game. Feel free to ask questions here about an ancient or spell tower you come across, and to add any strategies you employ with your ancients.

FOREVEIL

If you don't have him yet, GET HIM. ASAP.

There are other dragon ancients in the game, but 1) getting ancients other than Foreveil and Erasmus is 100% luck based and you therefore may not get any given one for a long time, if ever. And 2) even though he is not even "Rare", and he was nerfed a while back, he remains useful into the late stages of the game as an ancient.

Choosing which ancient you use in each particular battle is huge. But especially early in the game, it is good to pick one you are really comfortable with and get really good with her/him. Foreveil is one that everyone can get without any luck required and so if you can beat a tricky base with her in a kingdom raid, that means the others on your team of similar Foreveil and troop level can as well which is very valuable.

I almost always use Foreveil when I am attacking a base with multiple flash freeze towers. In fact, a huge pat of which ancient I choose in any battle is based on what kind of spell towers the opponent has and in what configuration. If a base is flash-freeze heavy, then Forey's 5-mana skill not only gives your troops you cast it on -35% damage, but it makes them IMMUNE to flash freeze towers. They waltz right across the base not freezing a millisecond, as long as you re-cast the spell as soon as it wears off.

If you get a lot of mana, his 15-mana skill Midwinter (freezes all buildings in a large area for a few seconds) is useful too. I don't much use her ice elemental summon any more but especially early in the game, a lot of players are most comfortable with the ancients that can summon troops, and she can. Smile

She is a "rare" but better than many "epic"s. She makes your troops immortal.

She will bring your troops back from the brink of death. One of the key things to remember when playing with her is to hold back some of your troops. Don't drop them all at once. That way, as the ones you dropped progress, and get low on health, you drop another portal of troops and Transfusion and suddenly everyone is at like 90% health.

One thing to watch out for when using her is Cursed Touch (purple) spell towers. When your troops have the cursed touch debuff on them, her 10-mana and 15-mana spells do not work. They are treated like "healing" in that respect.

Amongst top players, Jal is a favorite ancient. For one thing, he's "epic" and that means you can eventually level him to 50. [Rares cap at 40, superiors 30, commons only 15]. For another, insanity tower are prevalent at the top and Jal's specialty is dealing with ANY kind of spell tower. His 5-mana Scorching Heat, no matter what level your Jal, completely shuts down any single spell tower you cast it on, for 15 seconds. If you accidentally let your troops get too close to a tower, his 10-mana Oasis removes all lingering effects of the tower spell on your troops AND heals them.

But the most fun with Jal is his 15-mana Darken Skies... in combination with Scorching Heat. If you see a nice cluster of conduited and double-conduited spell towers blocking your access to a stronghold, and you can get hold of a lot of mana*, cast Scorching Heat on each of the towers (or as many as you can and still have 15 more mana within 15 seconds), then Darken Skies over the cluster. BOOM! ALL the spell towers with Scorching Heat on the disappear in a puff of smoke with Darken Skies (which ALSO damages and slows the other buildings within for a while). It's glorious.

* mana - many ancients work their best magic only with a lot of mana. You can get that with mana vial boosts... or with a portal (or boost) of mana hunters. Mana hunters are NOT the joke they would seem to be at first. If a mana hunter breathes on a building, then if ANY of your troops finishes off that building, you get +1 mana from it (except builders and tavern). So if you drop some maulers or soldiers to take out a periphery skywatcher, paladins to heal them from incoming fire, then drop mana hunters, then all your soldiers / wardens, you will start bringing in a lot of mana. Like, a LOT-lot of mana. If you think you might want to try the out, I recommend first trying them out with boosts, so you still have all the portal troops you are used to. You want your mana hunters a decent level, so if you like playing with them as boosts, then level yours in the blacksmith before trying, if they were passed over until now.
